This past May, Filipino/American Artist Directory & Aloha Got Soul tagged me on Happy Family Market’s open call to participate in curating a mix for Happy Family Radio, a monthly series highlighting the Asian diaspora. I finished the mix in mid-September and I’m super excited to share it with you for Filipino American History Month!

Thanks for creating space for our community, Happy Family Market, and maraming salamat for introducing me to my new kaibigan, Sacha Carlos-Raps! Maybe I can DJ for your night market in the future?

“Manila Sound is an era of Filipino music that started in the mid-70s. It is considered as the golden age of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) and will always be remembered as one of the few good things that came out during Ferdinand Marcos’ martial law regime. Groups like Hotdog, VST & Company, Boyfriends, and Cinderella ruled the airwaves and also helped shape what OPM is now. As a kid growing up in the Philippines—specifically, Kalookan City in the 80s—I was surrounded by music from the moment I woke up to the AM radio, to lunchtime variety shows with lots of song and dance, to the tunes played by jeepney and bus drivers.

I’ve been in Washington, DC for over 20 years now, but the songs I heard growing up made an impression on me. I play all sorts of music when I DJ but I wanted to share a mix of songs that lifted some of my people during those dark times.” - Les Talusan

If you enjoyed this mix and want to hear more, hang out with me twitch.tv/lestalusan for Bahala Na OPM Sundays, 9-11PM ET // 6-8PM PT, I’ll be playing a live, all-vinyl set of OPM for you and the whole barangay!

Bahala Na is a popular expression from the Philippines that is similar to the phrase "Que sera, sera" or “Whatever will be, will be.” It reflects both resiliency and a fatalistic attitude that I grew up with.

Bahala Na is a show that reflects my experiences and intrepid musical taste. Each set is curated with passion and spontaneity, so you can expect a variety of tunes, both familiar and foreign, from my eclectic record collection.

On Thursdays, 3-4PM, I'll be streaming live from Eaton Radio but this Friday (and maybe other Fridays as well), from 7-9PM, I'll be on IG Live from my home studio wearing my tsinelas.

Bahala Na!
7/10  IG Live @lestalusan (7-9PM)
7/16  Eaton Radio Mixcloud Live (3-4PM)
7/17 Mixcloud Live (7-9PM)
7/23  Eaton Radio Mixcloud Live (3-4PM)
7/30 Eaton Radio Mixcloud Live (3-4PM)

See you tonight! I’ll be playing records from 7-9PM EST. I’m thinking of playing a Punk Soul Sisters/Sister Sister set, dedicated to Sally Go Round, and everyone else who has encouraged me to keep DJing virtually.

IG live caps hourly so please tune back in if it cuts off. Also, you can listen through your browser, just log onto IG and go to @lestalusan live (maybe I can also stream on Mixcloud Live if I can figure it out!) 🖤.

SAMASAMA and The Sustainable Culture Lab are partnering to reclaim July as Diaspora People’s Month by Les Talusan

July has always been associated with independence and freedom in America, but since America fails to live up to its stated ideals and continues to oppress people of color, we have decided to reclaim July and celebrate diversity and the fight for freedom against white supremacy.

SAMASAMAxSCL will provide artists with the platform to share their work, speak their truth, and redefine America during this revolutionary time. Each week, we will showcase multiple artists and have discussions on various topics such as politics and diaspora culture. Attendees will be able to ask the artists questions, learn more about their practice, and of course, buy their art via our Diaspora People’s Month Gallery. 100% of art purchases will go to the artist.

All events are free and open to the public—any donations made during ticket registration will be directed to sustaining SAMASAMAxSCL’s free cultural offerings, and 10% of funds will be donated to the DC Chapter of the Movement for Black Lives.

We appreciate you for supporting this collective work!

Sustainable Culture Lab (SCL) is a cultural think tank committed to combatting and raising awareness of ethnocide—the killing of culture, while keeping the people—and the fostering of Eǔtopian spaces. The goal of our work is to both influence policy by working with legislators and decision-makers, and to also impact culture at a grassroots level through their events, work, and cultural offerings.

Through art and gathering, SAMASAMA highlights Asian American and Pacific Islander experiences to raise our voices collectively, acknowledging we’re part of a greater community and that we are all in this together. SAMASAMA programs showcase diversity within AAPI and diaspora communities as a platform for nuanced conversations and connection. As an unincorporated non-profit project sustained by volunteers, all donations fund SAMASAMA’s public offerings, as well as organizations supporting AAPI communities and allies.

BLACK LIVES MATTER by Les Talusan

Photo: Les Talusan

We affirm with pride that the SAMASAMA community is woven together through varied narratives of Asian, Pacific Islander, Black, Latinx, and Indigenous artists.⠀

In representing stories of non-Black communities of color, we must ask ourselves: in what ways are we perpetuating violent systems of oppression in this nation and in our ancestral homes? In what ways may we fight them?⠀

We must face the deep and painful truths of violence, racism, and colorism among the Asian and Black communities: through dismantling anti-Blackness in ourselves and our communities while simultaneously holding space for our humanity and trauma; through imagining liberated and decolonized ways of moving in the world, finding our voices, and being in relationship with one another. It is difficult work, and we will strive and falter.⠀

But we MUST commit to rooting ourselves in loving connections, and ensuring that our actions to flow from that place of true solidarity and care.⠀

Art is key in this work—be it solemn or joyful, exaltant or incisive. Art affirms our humanity; it gathers and connects us in powerful and unspoken ways, and allows us to build new worlds together.⠀

Let us rise up and use the power of art to support education, engagement, and direct action in and between our communities.⠀

Let us use our bodies, energies, skills and funds to fuel change, while we do the essential work of transforming ourselves from the inside out.⠀

In the coming weeks, we aim to uplift and highlight the voices of our Black artist family. Please take the time to support and LISTEN.

SAMASAMA 2020 by Les Talusan

To our SAMASAMA family, friends, and collaborators - AKA OUR COMMUNITY:

Like many of you, we needed to take time to process the progressing situation of COVID-19, but we are even more adamant about the importance of SAMASAMA.

Epidemics have historically perpetuated tension against and between people of color and immigrants, resulting in ‘xenophobia’ and racism within the diaspora community. The time now is more important than ever. This is a CALL FOR ARTISTS whose work has a greater impact than they ever realized. Through this shared global experience, albeit, an unfortunate one with many unknowns, there is no better opportunity than now to come together and celebrate through creative mediums. This is a call AGAINST fear and frustration.

The reality of our annual May exhibition is unclear, however, we are moving forward in accepting submissions. SAMASAMA dates are TBD and we will announce them as soon as it is deemed safe for us to gather once again to celebrate one another. For now, please plan on creating art that we can display virtually, be it visual or aural art.
